Google has been promising smarter cars for years, and now they’re finally making good on that promise. Starting today, vehicles with Google built-in are getting an upgrade from the old Google Assistant to Gemini.
This isn’t just for new cars either. Google is pushing the update to existing vehicles too, which is a nice change from the usual “you need to buy a new car for this feature” approach. Senior product manager Alankar Agnihotri made a point to mention that commitment back from 2020 when these cars first launched.
So what does Gemini actually do differently? According to Google, it handles natural conversations better — you can say “I’m cold” instead of “set temperature to 72 degrees” and it’ll figure out what you mean. It also knows vehicle-specific info, so you can ask about tire pressure or range without digging through menus.
I’ve seen this kind of promise before with other car assistants, and the execution usually falls short. But Google has the advantage of years of Assistant data and Gemini’s language chops. If it works as advertised, it could finally make in-car voice control not terrible.
The real test will be how well it handles noisy cabin environments and multiple passengers talking. Google didn’t mention anything about that, which makes me a little skeptical. Still, the fact that existing cars get the update is a win for owners who’ve been stuck with the same software since purchase.

I’ll be watching for real-world reviews before getting too excited. Car software updates have a habit of introducing new bugs along with new features. But at least Google is moving in the right direction — making the car smarter without forcing a hardware upgrade.
